Children & Youths
Supernutrition and a lack of physical activity are the main causses for overweight and adiposity (obesity) in young people. Genetic, hormonal, or psychosocial factors can contribute to the development of adiposity in children and adolescents.
In Germany about 15 percent of the children and youths are overweight, 6 percent are adipose (obese). These children and youths suffer from social exclusion and discrimination. Studies have shown that they are strongly stigmatized, they face prejudices and rejection. Presently about 80 percent of the overweight youths are also overweight as adults.
Furthermore, obese children and adolescents can already develop diseases associated with adiposity such as type II diabetes, high blood pressure, metabolic disorders, and a fatty liver. For these reasons it is important to become active against overweight at an early stage.
The University Hospital Leipzig offers in co-operation with IFB AdiposityDiseases a special adiposity outpatient clinic for obese children and youths. Together with the young patient and the parents physicians and nutritionists develop a therapy program. When the patient reaches the legal age the therapy can be resumed at the adiposity outpatient clinic for adults.
